Would you resort to alternative medicines. Why or why not? Please be specific. Any examples would be appreciated.

The problem with alternative medicine is that it is not subject to the same level of scientific rigor as is evidence-based medicine. For example, acupuncture is based on a totally invalid idea of energy meridians. It does provide pain relief, but the mechanism is well understood in terms of modern neuroscience. However, it does not cure anything.

I wouldn’t use alternative medicine for one reason — it doesn’t get put to the test. Homeopathy and acupuncture have their roots in magical ideas which have been long since disproven. If you think about it, there should be no such thing as “alternative” medicine. There should be medicine that has been proven to work. Period. Calling it “alternative medicine” is a clever way to exempt certain ideas from scientific scrutiny.
