I saw the full interview from BBC and I can’t really understand or
appreciate Matthew’s argument, just a few smart-ass comments here and

Peter Hitchens is basically a right-wing hack – someone with no expertise
or experience in this area, but someone who is paid to have partisan
opinions. Some of the things he was saying last night defied evidence and
logic. At one point he suggested that science shouldn’t be trusted in
labeling addiction as a medical condition because it has got things wrong
before. So to recap, his evidence (as a scientific layman) that the experts
have got it wrong, is that science has been wrong before and therefore is
    wrong now. Idiot.

Peter Hitchens is the Katie Hopkins of the male world. Taking drugs,
gambling, thinking you’re fat when you’re thin(anorexia), continuous food
eating are all an addiction. It takes over your mind, they are habitual,
people kill themselves as the need is more powerful than the will not to.
Only the strong come through it, you need all the help on offer to stop an
addiction. What Peter Hitchens is saying is akin to saying to someone with
depression and is suicidal “snap out of it”. I could give more instances
and arguments how Peter Hitchens is wrong here but he’s a waste of space.

Perry is right in that the addiction overcomes the willpower. It’s more
powerful plain and simple. It’s why Hitchin’s opinion is uninformed, as
deterrents only work if you have the will to follow through on a decision
    not to do it

How charming. Posting about feeding your opiate addiction on a video trying
    to help people.
